Rhetorical Analysis of an Article from Exploring Language Lutz and Conwell William Lutz and Russell Conwell are the two rhetoric speakers I have chosen. Conwell, a very intelligent, religious, and ambitious man, wrote a remarkable speech and read it thousands of times to thousands of people. Raising thousands of dollars, he used that money to build Temple University. With such a compelling speech, he encountered many people who enjoyed his work and his words are still remembered to this day. Conwell connects with audience on an emotional level, he almost befriends his audience. Talking to them as if they are on the same level, no matter who they are, almost as if they were his friend. Money printed your Bible, money builds your churches, money sends your missionaries, and money pays your preachers, and you would not have many of them, either, if you did not pay them. I am always willing that my church should raise my salary, because the church that pays the largest salary always raises it the easiest.† (44) He is saying that it is okay to have money, that does not mean that you are automatically an evil person. It’s not how much money you have, but what you choose to do with it. Conwell appeals to the common place idea and value of the American work ethic. If you work hard and do as you’re supposed to, anyone can make it. Having money, one can do good things as well as bad things. That’s when it comes down to the type of person you are. Conwell hooks his audience by telling a story in the very beginning. He continues his speech by diving into another story, keep the audience entertained and gaining their trust with every word. Both stories having the same moral, which is that you must be great where you are now, to be great somewhere else. Before I begin I feel that I need to express a point. The point I must make is that this is my opinion about this chosen topic and I hope it will be read with a open mind and not cast down before it has been finished. What I would like to discuss in written form is ‘Is the human race on a collision course for its own destruction’ which needs no further addressment by myself but I feel the need to express a point or two. We have evolved on Earth from a simple ‘goo’ that has been dubbed ‘primordial soup’ by those ever clever scientists. This fact maybe false by religious standards but it is the most likely solution to the problem of how we came to be. For Christian people we were came to be by an omnipotent being that took out the time to create two people, Adam and Eve, and I think that this is a good example of peoples delusions of supremacy. For thousands of years now man and woman have played an overwhelming part in the development of this planet usually with the misconception that Earth is theirs and theirs alone and everything else is just here for are needs. We have destroyed landscape to accommodate our needs of hoes, farmland and entertainment. This is normally done with little regard for the previous inhabitants be they man or beast, especially concerning the treatment of native Indians on what is now American soil. All this is done for ‘progress’, the usual excuse so that the superior people can beat on the weak. The advancement in technology is aided by the legions of great scientific minds which always seem to be controlled by some military power somewhere in the shadows watching, with interest what it is that is created next. As soon as a more advanced technology is developed it is used to show strength over neighbouring countries be they friend or foe. One of the biggest problems is that all this technology can and probably be used to destroy each other as long as they are continually brought under the control of power mongers such as governments run by politicians. To think that our own destruction is a certainty is an incorrect opinion to have, there are many variables that could change any future timeline, so who knows what the future will hold for us. There is always the chance for reformation where humanity will realise that they are in control of their fate and don’t have to conform to human natures tendency to try and destroy itself. For those whoa re fans of science fiction it may be apparent that Earth is either depicted as a world in trouble, with a large population and lots of pollution like in such movies as Blade Runner and others. The other side of this point is seen in such programs as Star Trek where humanity has been united with the thought that they are not alone in the universe. The program depicts a highly advanced culture that has broke free from the corruptive shekels of money and governmental rule. When people realise that there is only one race on Earth and that is the Human Race then they will be able to get along better. Money also presents a problem, that’s not to say it should be abolished and communism should take president because it has been shown time and time again that it cannot work in today’s world. I think the best thing to do is carry on with existence doing the best you can to make life just a bit easier for yourself and others around. Answer: Introduction I practiced subcutaneous medication administration skill in the school on a manikin due to patient safety. I performed the skill single-handedly after reading broadly and mastering the procedure. I had always felt that the skill was hard especially as it involved inflicting pain on a patient. I was anxious as I was performing the skill in front of my colleagues, but I managed to carry it out successfully without any major challenge except for the few aspects such as consent and rights of drug administration I did not meet in the procedure. Before, I felt nervous and unprepared for the task. After executing the skill, I felt more confident and contented with my ability to administer subcutaneous medication successfully. I felt satisfied and prepared do better in the actual clinical area after carrying out the skill in the right manner except for a few things that I missed out. It was motivating to receive praises from my classmates, making me develop self-confidence. I later realized that confidence and motivation contribute to improved quality care to patients by nurses (Amer, 2013). After the skill, I learned that it requires regular practice to perfect a skill. This is after speaking with a few of my classmates about their experience and feeling of readiness. Additionally, I found it a normal to be anxious while performing an activity for the first time and especially if it is in public. However, the level of anxiety varies from one individual to another due to the level of preparedness, experience and the reaction from the audience (Shahin University of Alberta, 2015). It came to my realization that my exemplary performance in the carrying out of the skill was mostly influenced by my broad reading about the procedure. As stipulated by Jeffreys (2012), theory is an essential part while one is trying to acquire a clinical skill. It informs them on how to perform it better as well as the rationales behind each action. Moreover, I committed errors since I was performing the skill single-handedly and as pointed out by Cloete (2015), team collaboration not only does it minimize medication errors but also it enhances interpersonal communication skills and patient outcome. In retrospect, I would perform various things in a different manner. I was supposed to look for an assistant who could have helped me in checking rights of drug administration besides reminding me to rectify the errors that I was committing all along. I feel that had I communicated earlier to one of my classmates; I would have performed better than I did because I would have been less anxious. However, the experience has taught me that anxiety can be better reduced when one is working as part of a team (Bach Grant, 2011). In future, I will ensure that I have reviewed the procedure of any skill before performing it. I also intend to work closely with my classmates as we can share experiences and learn from each other. We have already formed a discussion group which I think will help other members and me in presentation skills, reducing anxiety, group work, team collaboration and interpersonal communication skills (Bach Grant, 2011).
